What is a thermocouple?

A thermocouple, also known as a "thermoelectrical thermometer", is an electrical device consisting of two dissimilar electrical conductors forming an electrical junction. A thermocouple produces a temperature-dependent voltage as a result of the Seebeck effect, and this voltage can be interpreted to measure temperature. Thermocouples are widely used as temperature sensors.

FAQ

Q: What is the principle of thermocouple?

A: The thermocouple working principle is based on the Seeback Effect. This effect states that when a closed circuit is formed by jointing two dissimilar metals at two junctions, and junctions are maintained at different temperatures then an electromotive force (e.m.f.) is induced in this closed circuit.

Q: What is base metal thermocouple?

A: Base metal thermocouples are made from conductors containing nickel alloys and depending on thermocouple type are suited for measuring temperatures between -270 to +1300°C. They are a rugged design, suited for tough industrial use.

Q: What is the difference between noble metal and base metal thermocouples?

A: The noble metal thermocouples, types B, R, and S, are all platinum-based thermocouples, which are the least sensible, but are the most stable among thermocouples. The base metal thermocouples, known as types E, J, K, T, and N, have higher sensibilities than the noble metal.

Q: Why are there different types of thermocouples?

A: Different metals exhibit different properties, and the hot junction formed between these two metal wires defines the thermocouple. To yield better results, scientists and researchers have standardized some metal combinations and segregated them as thermocouple types.

Q: What is an example of a base metal thermocouple?

A: Base Metal Thermocouple types are composed of common, inexpensive metals such as nickel, iron and copper. The thermocouple types E, J, K, N and T are of this group and are the most commonly used type of thermocouple. HRS 446, Inconel 600/601/800, Nickel, Hastalloy, etc.

Q: Should I choose a Type K or Type N thermocouple?

A: Type N Thermocouple (Nicrosil / Nisil): The Type N shares the same accuracy and temperature limits as the Type K. The type N is slightly more expensive. The type N has better repeatability between 572F to 932F (300C to 500C) compared to the type K.

Q: What is the output of a thermocouple?

A: Thermocouples produce outputs in the millivolt range. These signals can easily be affected by electro-magnetic interference from radios, high voltage devices and electric motors among others. In these cases, the thermocouple must be protected from the interference.

Q: What is the benefit of thermocouple?

A: Thermocouples are very accurate at a wide operating range. Thermocouples have extreme durability. Thermocouples are self-powered, so they do not require a current or voltage source. Thermocouples can withstand high vibrations.

Q: What type of thermocouples are used?

A: Type K,N,E,J&T are “Base Metal” thermocouples, the most common types of thermocouples. Type R, S, and B thermocouples are “Noble Metal” thermocouples, which are used in high temperature applications.Type C,D and A are “Tungsten rhenium’’thermocouples, with maximum operating temperature in vacuum and inert environment.

Q: Which thermocouple is widely used?

A: Type K Thermocouple (Nickel-Chromium): The type K is the most common type of thermocouple. It's inexpensive, accurate, reliable, and has a wide temperature range. Temperature Range: Thermocouple grade wire, –454 to 2,300F (–270 to 1260C).

Q: How is thermocouple connected to PLC?

A: There are two ways to connect thermocouples and RTDs to a PLC. The first method is connecting them to a transmitter that connects to a PLC and a log input module, or the second method, where some PLCs have a temperature sensor module, so sensors are connected directly to them.

Q: Why thermocouple is good for high temperature?

A: They have a reasonably high and relatively linear EMF output and provide an excellent accuracy for extremely high temperature measurements up to 4170°F (2300°C).

Q: What is the difference between Class 1 and Class 2 thermocouple?

A: Class 2 has the widest error margin with class 1 typically (but not exclusively) approximately half that of Class 2. Class 1 is very similar to ANSI special limits, with ANSI special limits having a slightly tighter tolerance than Class 1 at certain temperatures.

Q: Which thermocouple is more accurate?

A: Accuracy: Type T thermocouples have the tightest accuracy of all the base metal thermocouples at ±1C or ±0.75% whichever is greater, but the temperature range is just -40~350C. This is followed by Type E (±1.5C or 0.5%) and Types J, K and N (±2.5C or 0.75%) for standard limits of error.

Q: Where is thermocouple used in industry?

A: Thermocouples are used in many industrial, scientific, applications. They can be found in nearly all industrial markets: Power Generation, Mining, Oil/Gas, Pharmaceutical, BioTech, Cement, Paper, Glass, furnaces, kilns and many more.

Q: Why use thermocouple wire?

A: What is it Used For? Thermocouples are connected to wires that are used to measure the temperature of applications like diesel engines, exhausts, and other industrial processes where temperature monitoring is critical. The thermocouple wire is connected to a sensor used for determining temperature.

Q: What are the properties of thermocouple?

A: The thermocouple thermometer is by far the most widely used device for measurement of temperature. Its favorable characteristics include good accuracy, suitability over a wide temperature range, fast thermal response, ruggedness, high reliability, low cost, and great versatility of application.

Q: Is a thermocouple analog or digital?

A: All temperature sensors are analog. Analog simply means a continuously variable output, with no discrete steps. Thermocouples develop a voltage across the cold junction that is proportional to temperature. RTD (Resistance Thermal Devices) vary resistance proportional to temperature.

Q: Can a thermocouple overheat?

A: There is such a thing as too much heat for a thermocouple. Whether you accidentally use a thermocouple that isn't meant to operate at your applications temperatures or your processed run hotter than they should, exposure to overheating can damage the elements in a thermocouple.

Q: Why do thermocouples fail?

A: There are any number of ways a thermocouple can fail. It can short out, the sheath can fail, it can be damaged during operation or installation, it can be improperly installed, etc. The key is to perform a thorough root-cause analysis and prevent the failure again in the future, if possible.

Q: Do thermocouples need calibration?

A: With constant use, the efficacy of the thermocouple deteriorates over time. So it is important that calibration should be made to ensure that the thermocouple works smoothly.

Q: What is the purpose of EGT?

A: An exhaust gas temperature gauge (EGT gauge or EGT sensor) is a meter used to monitor the exhaust gas temperature of an internal combustion engine in conjunction with a thermocouple-type pyrometer. EGT gauges are found in certain cars and aeroplanes.
