What is a thermocouple?

A thermocouple, also known as a "thermoelectrical thermometer", is an electrical device consisting of two dissimilar electrical conductors forming an electrical junction. A thermocouple produces a temperature-dependent voltage as a result of the Seebeck effect, and this voltage can be interpreted to measure temperature. Thermocouples are widely used as temperature sensors.

FAQ

Q: What is noble metal thermocouple?

A: Noble metal thermocouples are made from conductors containing platinum and rhodium alloys and are suited for measuring high temperatures up to +1700°C. They are a rugged design, suited for tough industrial use.

Q: What is multipoint thermocouple?

A: Multipoint thermocouples accurately measure temperature at various locations along the length of the sensor. They are particularly useful for detecting hotspots and uneven flow and are used in a variety of applications where there is a large or complex process and correct temperature management is critical.

Q: What is a spike thermocouple?

A: Spike thermocouples are critical temperature measurement devices used in horizontal and vertical heating elements for precise control over operation. Made from the highest quality material, these thermocouples are manufactured to original equipment specifications.

Q: What is Semi-Conductor Thermocouple?

A: With uses across the semi-conductor, solar and LED lighting industries, these sensors are exclusively designed for high accuracy in the critical process of temperature measurement and control.

Q: What are the advantages of noble metal thermocouples?

A: Platinum-rhodium thermocouples have the advantages of the highest accuracy, best stability, wide temperature range, long service life, and high-temperature limit.

Q: What are noble metal thermocouples generally used for?

A: Noble metal thermocouples (e.g., platinum and platinum-rhodium) are used for high-temperature measurements (600–1600°C), as they are chemically inert even if sensitive to gamma and neutron radiation.

Q: What are noble metal thermocouples made of?

A: Noble Metal Thermocouples are manufactured with precious or noble metals like Platinum and Rhodium. Noble metal thermocouples can be used in oxidizing or inert applications and must be used with a ceramic protection tube surrounding the thermocouple element. These are normally used for high-temperature applications.

Q: Which of the following are noble metal thermocouples?

A: The most widely used noble metal thermocouple is Type “S” or Platinum vs Platinum-10% rhodium. Well known for its high accuracy over a broad temperature range, it is in common use for controlling the processing of steel, glass, and many refractory materials.

Q: What is the most suitable material for thermocouple?

A: Platinum is the most suitable material for constructing thermocouples. It has a very high sensitivity.

Q: What are the main differences between base metal and noble metal thermocouples?

A: The noble metal thermocouples, types B, R, and S, are all platinum-based thermocouples, which are the least sensible, but are the most stable among thermocouples. The base metal thermocouples, known as types E, J, K, T, and N, have higher sensibilities than the noble metal.

Q: What metals are in R type thermocouple?

A: Thermocouple Type R: Types R thermocouples, (Platinum vs. 13% Rhodium/Platinum), are usable up to 1480°C (2,700°F). They are extremely stable but reducing atmospheres are particularly damaging.

Q: What metals are in a Type S thermocouple?

A: Type S Thermocouple (Platinum Rhodium - 10% / Platinum): The Type S is used in very high temperature applications. It is commonly found in the BioTech and Pharmaceutical industries. It is sometimes used in lower temperature applications because of its high accuracy and stability.

Q: What is B type thermocouple?

A: Type B Thermocouple is composed of a positive leg which is 70% Platinum, 30% Rhodium and a negative leg which is 94% platinum, 6% Rhodium. When protected by compacted mineral insulation and appropriate outer sheath, Type B is usable from 600 to 1704°C, (1100 to 3100°F).

Q: What is the difference between Type S and Type R thermocouple?

A: The main difference between type S and R is the higher percentage of Rhodium in the type R. This makes this thermocouple cable more expensive yet gives a (small) higher output and is overall a bit more stable than the type S. Type S sensitivity is between 6 and 12 µV/°C. Type R has a sensitivity between 6 and 14µV/°C.

Q: What is the difference between Type B and S thermocouple?

A: Maximum recommended operating temperature for Type S or R is 1450°C (2640°F); Type B is recommended for use at as high as 1700°C (3100°F). These thermocouples are easily contaminated. Reducing atmospheres are particularly damaging to the calibration.

Q: What is Type B thermocouple used for?

A: The main purpose of selecting a B type thermocouple over other thermocouple types is to measure very high temperatures. Metal sheaths have lower operating temperatures than ceramic sheaths so this design is quite rare.

Q: How do I know which thermocouple to buy?

A: These include criteria such as: temperature range, response time, chemical and mechanical resistance and installation location. A thermocouple that is not an optimal match can reduce process efficiency and product quality as well as diminish the accuracy, reliability and long-term performance of the sensor.

Q: Why thermocouple is good for high temperature?

A: The output emf increases along with an increase in temperature. Depending on the application, different types of metals can be used to produce the required voltage. This allows for the thermocouples to be provided in different calibrations to meet various application temperature requirements.

Q: Can a thermocouple touch metal?

A: The thermocouple measures temperature properly until it is around 800 deg C. At this temperature and above IF the thermocouple probe is touching the metal furnace tube the temperature signal drops off significantly. When the probe is not touching the tube at high temperature, it makes the correct reading.
