Temperature Sensor Selection Guide – Match Your Application Accurately To Avoid Costly Mismatches

Jun 17, 2026 Leave a message

Many overseas buyers encounter issues where the temperature sensor they receive does not perform well in their actual operating conditions. This is rarely due to poor product quality, but rather incorrect selection – which not only affects performance but also leads to unnecessary cost waste.

Based on different temperature measurement scenarios and application requirements, here is a professional selection guide:

Normal to Medium Temperature Applications (–50°C to 400°C)

For industrial automation, pipeline monitoring, HVAC, and similar standard conditions, the Pt100 RTD (resistance temperature detector) is the preferred choice. It offers high accuracy and stable performance, making it ideal for continuous operation in normal and medium-low temperature applications.

High Temperature Applications (above 500°C, especially above 800°C)

For high-temperature environments such as boilers, kilns, and heat treatment furnaces, thermocouples are the ideal solution. They provide excellent high-temperature resistance and fast response, particularly suitable for extreme industrial conditions above 800°C.

*Note: In certain applications between 500°C and 800°C, specialized high-temperature RTDs may also be considered. The final choice should be based on specific temperature range and accuracy requirements.*

Additional Selection Recommendations Based on Operating Environment

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) → Use a shielded cable sensor

Strong vibration → Choose a vibration-resistant design or a model with lead wire strain relief

Frequent installation and removal → Threaded, flanged, or quick-plug connection types are more convenient – the quick-plug type is especially suitable for applications requiring regular sensor changes

There is no absolute "good" or "bad" temperature sensor – only the right one for your specific application.
